The HBCU Met Gala is a premier fundraising and community celebration dedicated to honoring the rich history, legacy, and excellence of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Inspired by the elegance of the Met Gala, this signature event brings together community leaders, educators, business professionals, elected officials, alumni, students, and supporters for an unforgettable evening of celebration, recognition, and purpose.

The Gala serves as a scholarship fundraiser, with proceeds helping provide financial assistance to deserving students pursuing higher education at HBCUs. Through this event, we celebrate educational achievement, recognize outstanding community leadership, and invest in the next generation of scholars and changemakers.

HBCU Met Gala Honoree Nomination Criteria

The HBCU Met Gala recognizes outstanding individuals whose leadership, service, and accomplishments have made a lasting impact on their communities while exemplifying the spirit of excellence, education, and empowerment associated with Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Eligibility

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following areas:

  • Community service and civic engagement

  • Education and student mentorship

  • Business or entrepreneurial leadership

  • Public service or government leadership

  • Healthcare and human services

  • Arts, entertainment, fashion, or media

  • Faith-based leadership

  • Youth development

  • Nonprofit leadership

  • Corporate leadership and professional excellence

Selection Criteria

Nominees should meet the following qualifications:

Leadership

  • Demonstrates exceptional leadership within their profession, organization, or community.

  • Serves as a positive role model and inspires others through their actions.

Community Impact

  • Has made significant contributions that have positively affected individuals, organizations, or communities.

  • Shows a sustained commitment to volunteerism, advocacy, or public service.

Professional Excellence

  • Demonstrates integrity, innovation, and excellence within their chosen field.

  • Has achieved notable accomplishments or recognition through their work.

Commitment to Education

  • Supports educational advancement through mentoring, scholarships, advocacy, teaching, or youth development.

  • Promotes opportunities that encourage academic success and lifelong learning.

Character and Integrity

  • Exhibits professionalism, ethical leadership, honesty, and accountability.

  • Represents the values of service, respect, and excellence.

Alignment with the Mission

  • Embodies the mission of the HBCU Met Gala by supporting educational opportunity, leadership development, community empowerment, and the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Nomination Requirements

Each nomination must include:

  • A completed nomination form.

  • A professional essay (250–500 words).

  • A high-resolution professional headshot.

  • A summary of the nominee's accomplishments and community impact.

  • At least one letter of recommendation.

  • Links or supporting documentation highlighting awards, recognitions, publications, media coverage, or community involvement (optional but encouraged).

Selection Process

All nominations will be reviewed by the HBCU Met Gala Selection Committee. Honorees will be selected based on demonstrated leadership, measurable community impact, professional accomplishments, integrity, and alignment with the mission of the HBCU Met Gala. Selection is made through a fair and impartial review process.

Honoree Expectations

Individuals selected as HBCU Met Gala Honorees are expected to:

  • Attend the HBCU Met Gala if reasonably possible.

  • Serve as ambassadors for education, leadership, and community service.

  • Support the mission of expanding scholarship opportunities for students.

  • Uphold the professionalism and integrity associated with the HBCU Met Gala.

Being selected as an HBCU Met Gala Honoree is one of the organization's highest recognitions and celebrates individuals whose service and leadership continue to inspire future generations.
